EU launches first public database on substances of high concern in articles-SCIP database
Release time:
2021-09-30 14:34
On September 16, 2021, the SCIP database was released, becoming the first public database on substances of high concern in the European Union.
According to the newly revised EU "Waste Framework Directive" (WFD Directive), starting from January 5, 2021, all articles circulating in the EU that contain more than 0.1%(w/w) of substances of high concern (SVHCs) will need to submit a notification to ECHA, namely SCIP notification. ECHA collects and collates the information submitted by enterprises and establishes SCIP database to ensure that the information of the whole life cycle (including waste stage) of these products and materials is open.

SCIP database contents
At present, thousands of companies in the EU have successfully completed SCIP notifications to ECHA, and the published SCIP database contains more than millions of SCIP notifications. The disclosure of the SCIP database includes information on the identification of the notified article, instructions for safe use, substances of high concern and the type of material to which they belong.

SCIP database query application
The release of the SCIP database could facilitate public tracking of products containing substances of high concern. Businesses or consumers can obtain information by searching for item names or identifiers, item categories, material/mixture types, substances of high concern, and reasons for inclusion. Waste operators can use this information to improve the reuse rate of waste, and consumers can use this information to determine whether a product contains harmful substances, so as to confirm whether to buy.
After the EU releases the SCIP database, for the majority of enterprises that export products to Europe, the latest SVHC confirmation is required to fulfill the compliance obligations of REACH regulations.
