U.S. Environmental Protection Agency EPA fines unregistered disinfectant manufacturer
Release time:
2021-11-17 14:38
Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a settlement with 99 Ranch Market over claims for the sale of G-Sol antibacterial sprays, an unregistered disinfectant product that violates federal law fines. Prior to the settlement, EPA took a series of enforcement actions to protect human health and the environment from misleading and harmful claims during COVID-19 public health emergencies. 99 Ranch Market has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $206,805.
"Unregistered disinfectants that are not properly tested and registered pose a serious risk to consumers," said Amy Miller, director of enforcement and compliance for the EPA's Pacific Southwest Region. "EPA remains vigilant and will continue to take enforcement action against companies that sell products that illegally claim to be effective against COVID-19."
In March 2021, the EPA inspected the 99 Ranch Market store in Concord, California. During this inspection, the EPA found that the store had sold non-EPA-registered G-Sol antimicrobial sprays to 28 customers. Under the federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, products (including disinfectants) that claim to kill or repel bacteria or germs are considered pesticides and must be registered with the EPA. Public health claims can only be made for products that have been properly tested and registered with the EPA. EPA will not approve a registered disinfectant until it is determined that it does not pose an unreasonable risk when used in accordance with label instructions. Products that are not EPA registered may be harmful to human health, cause adverse effects, and may not be effective in preventing the spread of bacteria.
