EPA Continues to Adjust New Coronavirus Disinfectant Registration Requirements
Release time:
2020-12-10 14:12
The global epidemic continues to spread, with US media saying the US epidemic has reached "catastrophic" level. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been continuously adjusting the registration requirements for disinfectant products to combat the use of SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19) in response to the outbreak.
In an effort to minimize risks to its residents, the EPA first launched the Emerging Viral Pathogen Microbicide Guidelines in January 2020. Under this guidance, the EPA allows manufacturers to provide data to the agency even before the outbreak to prove that their products are effective against the hard-to-kill virus. Once approved, the companies can make a market statement against the new coronavirus.
In early March, the EPA released its initial List N: Disinfectants for SARS-CoV-2 (List N). The list will continue to be updated weekly. It can be searched and sorted, and comes with useful tips on how to use disinfectants correctly, and provides some common questions to ensure the correct use of products. As with any EPA-registered product, read the label carefully and use the product only in accordance with its instructions.
Also in March, the EPA initiated an expedited review process for the new Emerging Viral Pathogen Claim submission so that applicable products can be added to List N as soon as possible.
In May, the EPA expanded the fast-track review process to include new products as well as existing product label amendments that require review of new efficacy data.
In July, the EPA began speeding up the approval process by adding instructions for the use of electrostatic sprayers to combat new crown products. Electrostatic spraying has attracted increasing attention in the new crown crisis due to the need to disinfect large indoor spaces or areas with many surfaces.
In November, in an effort to ensure that Americans have as many sanitizing products as possible to use against SARS-CoV-2, the EPA issued a fast-track guide for highly effective remanent sanitizing products.
With the research and testing institutions of disinfection products in the United States gradually establishing SARS-CoV-2 virus inactivation test methods, 62 products have passed the test for SARS-CoV-2 virus inactivation effect since June, while 26 products passed the SARS-CoV-2 inactivation test in October and were registered with EPA.
